ARCHIPRIX 2019 WINNERS | Sara Pellegrini and Domenico Spagnolo

Sara Pellegrini and Domenico Spagnolo are among the winners of the 2019 edition of the Archiprix International Competition, with their thesis project Waliców, Fortress of Memory. Museum of the Present Between Warsaw's Ghetto Ruins.

The design programme is based on a physical and conceptual excavation of the foundations of Warsaw, activating a form of 'critical archaeology' that strengthens the identity of places of memory and their deep meanings.

321 graduation projects designed by 407 young architects, landscape architects and urban designers were submitted for the Archiprix International Chile 2019.

An international jury selected 7 projects for the 2019 Archiprix International / Hunter Douglas Awards.

The jury verdict (from Archiprix website)

At first glance, this might look like a nostalgic project about preservation, one of the many projects submitted to this edition of Archiprix International that deal with commemoration, memorials to what once happened or existed. But this project is not a memorial. Rather, it is programmed for the future, and it outlines the clear responsibility of architecture. It is an intellectually mature project that resonates with the now. What happened then could happen again today or tomorrow. The designers adopt a very clear position on ethics and urban form in the past and in the future.

Vittorio Gregotti | Città europea e periferia (Europejskie miasta i peryferie)

| Read More (italian version)  >  |  Read More (polish version)  >

Guido Morpurgo | The ghetto 'tradition' in contemporary european cities: memory, narrative and reissues

The year 2016 will mark 500 years since the first ghetto was formally established in Venice: 29 March 1516 saw urban segregation introduced as a deliberate coercive act. Yet the roots of the ghetto as an area of forced residence for Jewish communities can be traced more exactly back to the late Middle Ages in Western Europe, where it remained a fixture until the end of the 19th century. European cities, therefore, hold the primacy of instituting and perpetuating the forced separation of the faiths and ethnicities that, ironically, have provided an invaluable contribution to Europe’s intrinsically multicultural and hybrid identity.

Project Waliców | A Memorial of the present between former Warsaw Ghetto's ruins, AY 2016-2017

The European city has a kind of sad primacy of the origin of forced separation between ethnic and religious groups, althought they represent the same components that have contributed to the very identity of Europe as inherently multicultural archipelago.

In its problematic extension, the spatial principle that polarizes the ghetto institution has been declined in a variety of occasions over the time, as a sequence of fences imposed to defend privileges and racial or national identity supposed to separate community and linguistic groups. | Read More >
